CoronaVirus sucks. [laughter]
The DAY we decided to shut down…me and Allie [another instructor at Give Yoga], we were sitting around talking. We were talking about the possibility of the pandemic growing enough for everything to shut down. I think they had just done the stay-at-home order in Italy. We didn’t know yet, we were still kinda unsure…
And then Allie went and taught [a yoga class]. Then Leah [Give Yoga’s owner] had sent the message saying that we were shutting down. Like, in the midst of Allie teaching! When she went in we were having a conversation about what it would look like if we did shut down and then when she came out, we were having a conversation about actually shutting down. It was like, aw man, this is real! This is happening, this is now!
I dunno, like, Corona sucks, of course, but like, I kinda enjoy social distancing and teaching yoga online. I think people show up more authentic.

Really?

Mhmm. I think it’s more ‘come as you are’. People are just more willing to show up, just like, with whatever is going on. It’s not as much to hide behind. Cause you know, we’re in your personal space. People are just different at home.
Yeah…I was teaching [a yoga class] and Nicole, [another instructor] and I were talking during the class. She was outside at the Clintonville peaceful protest and we talked about that for a second. How much change in the small span of time since we’ve been going through this pandemic.

It’s like we moved through social distancing to social unrest. We were really far apart and then this thing happened and it just brings us really close together. Not just physically but mentally, emotionally. Everybody’s emotions are really high.

I really hope that the virus doesn’t spike again with protests. It really concerns me, everybody getting close together...

Yeah, yeah, yeah with all the protests and stuff that’s really where my mind’s at. I don’t really want to go protest. People aren’t being mindful and aware that this thing is still going on. It’s out there and active and it’s alive…

Yeah. Protests. It’s for a good cause. It’s really just the tip of the iceberg. I don’t think the protest are extreme or anything. I think they’re necessary to a point. I just think there are so many other things for people to attach to, or like, other movements and ways people can show support of a community and black culture. There are so many more ways and so many other issues out there [that also harm our community] in addition to police brutality.

Police brutality gets so much attention because it’s so present. We see it all the time. And then you have stuff like infant mortality [in black children] and black women, the way they are treated in doctor’s offices as patients. There’s just so much, so much more.
